# | Coach Foster is too invested in Virginia Tech to leave the Hokies. I think it is VERY important that we remember that Bud wasn't guaranteed to be on this staff, he wasn't involved with the coaching search, and he was told he wasn't going to be a serious candidate at the beginning of the process out of respect from Whit Babcock. He had every reason in the world to leave this program, and yet, the first thing Fuente did after deciding to take the job was to meet Bud in person and sell himself and his vision in hopes of keeping him around. Bud is our defensive coordinator in the future because he is the best man for that job as determined by Coach Fuente.
There are so many ways this process could have been bungled from the beginning, and yet every step of the way was dead on. Who would have thought our Athletic Department would have this much savvy when we absolutely needed it the most after the years and years of lazy hires and bungled PR disasters.

Frank Beamer has a net worth of $10 million, and Shane has spent the last several years with a salary well into the six figures. It stands to reason that Shane and his family can weather the storm, given that with Shane's resume he's basically guaranteed to do no worse than another position coach job at a P5 school.
Smart move by Bud. He will get to pick the brain of a very smart offensive coach and pit his unit against it in practice. It will make him more marketable as a HC in the near future.
Bud does already coach the inside LB's but recruiting seems to have gotten a bit stale there. I was thinking a guy like Grimm or Taylor might be able to help us on the recruiting trail.

Looking at some stats they seemed to have a 3 back theme. a clear RB1- Doroland Dorceus 144 carries RB2- Jarvis Cooper 87 carries RB3 Sam Craft 77 carries
for shits and giggles
their rb that had 58 carries gained 310 yards and 4 TDs
JC had 40 carries for 143 yards and 1 TD
the issue wasn't the rotation it was why are we rotating backs when 2 of them don't produce results.
No reason to listen to anyone wearing loluva gear.

Or maybe, and I'm just guessing here, the same argument that everyone had about Bud Foster being a head coach, could be applied to Gray being a defensive coordinator. OR I know it's wishful thinking but maybe Gray only wants to be a DB coach.
At least I don't recall of a time where he has stated he wants to be a defensive coordinator. (any sources?)
I would be very happy with Scott and while the money could/would be better I'm not sold on the move from a career development standpoint. It all really depends on what Scott is looking for (ie career progression vs stability)... If he feels that he will be retained at Memphis in the DC capacity I feel that would be a better resume builder than moving back down the totem pole (even to work at a better football school).
This was really the optimal result.
I think we'll get a better offensive staff than would have been possible with Bud as HC, we got a younger head coach, we'll get a lot of new faces in the program, and these guys all have current connections all over the place.
After listening to Fuente, I think he can sell recruits. He sure sold me.
Bud really is a mastermind on defense. If he gets an uptick in recruiting, I think this team will be a force to be reckoned with. VT really did get the best of both worlds, and I don't think it would have been possible without offering up the HC spot to a proven guy on offense.
I hope shane does well in his next gig and I doubt he sticks around either its early in this whole process and things change daily, can't see him sticking around to be a recruiting coordinator or whatever it may be.
I think we need to keep in mind that Whit may have given Fuente a few talking points for the press conference. I believe he thinks recruiting is important, but there has to be a balance with real coaching ability.

Dickey has HS kids and may stay in Memphis as OC if Odom comes back.

And to be honest, I tried to read the bios of all Memphis coaches quickly and did a gut check. As you said, he was a great college LB and also coached LB / DL in the NFL. Born in VA. And would give Foster a fresh set of eyes on a position which has lacked elite talent in the recent years (eg Adibi / Hall). I agree that Foster would still be involved with LBs across the board, but with Cornell Brown leaving there is a "outside linebackers and assistant defensive line coach" opening which Hunley has the skillset for... just my 2 cents!
Locksley's reputation doesn't seem to match the community tone of the current staff.
So not worth it, even if he's the recruit-whisperer.
What about some other names from recently demolished staffs we should keep an eye on? Chris Beatty and Chip West from UVA? Elliott and Mangus at USC'e? Locksley has been mentioned previously, I hope all washed their hands thoroughly after typing his name.
Former VT assistants: Was Tony Ball still at UGA? Whammy Ward at USC?
In particular, we need to add at least one key mid-atlantic recruiter.
Ben Taylor has been coaching LBs for a few years now at a high school level and a small college here in VA. He'd be ready to take the next step. Cody would be good too, but Bud already coaches the LBs. The whip spot could be absorbed into either DBs or LBs, making room for another coaching position. Maybe split the DBs into corners and safeties like some schools do and have a coach for each. That way we could bring someone in for TG to groom to take his place if he's looking to move on to a DC position somewhere in the future.
I'm calling it now. Navy wins, and shortly thereafter Ken Niumatalolo is named Head Coach of UVa.
