I know there's sarcasm there, but there really are a whole lot of differences between wrestling and football recruiting. Given the limited financial opportunities post college, it's actually arguably much easier to get a kid to go to a school/program that will actually be a good fit for him instead of following the flashy distractions that often accompany high-profile football recruits.

Those teams may have been scoring a lot, but how much passing were those teams doing? How many possessions per game were there? How many plays per game were those teams running? How important was the battle for field position for those teams?
Again, Bud Foster's defensive scheme is most effective when each individual possession is more important. It's a risky, aggressive defense that sacrifices the occasional big play for giving up few sustained drives. If you play for field possession and a minimal number of possessions, you increase the likelihood that a team won't be able to score on a sustained drive, minimize the likelihood that a big play will result in a score, increase the likelihood of good field position for the offense and in better position to score, and put pressure on the opposing offense to take risks (Beamerball).
It a lot of ways GT is like the inverse offensive version of the VT defense. It's designed to make every possession important by minimizing possessions through sustained, time consuming drives with the occasional big play. It forces the the opposing defense to take risks to get the GT offense off the field and pressures the opposing offense because two or three a 3 and outs can be fatal when you might only get the ball 8 or 10 times.
I'm not saying 'oh shit'. Not yet anyway. OSU was able to frustrate Marcus Mariotta and the Oregon offense last year; I'm not getting overly concerned yet that they were able to stymie a Brendon Motley running plays that IMO were intentionally called primarily to get him through the game unscathed so he could play the next 4-6 weeks -- not to take advantage of his strengths and try (almost certainly) futilely to win the game.
I was impressed with the o line early and often. I think we are seeing the fruits of Searels having his second off season now. We have three tackles and three guards. With a backup at either tackle spot, somewhere we haven't been in a while.
Shai has proven his ability to hit holes better, get him churning and I think things will go well. Loefler can hopefully burn people if they stack the box, he got Rogers and Malleck wide open for their TD's
Edit-meant to throw this in, I had a great view of Searels all night, he was coaching them up. The o line immediately came off the field and too the bench where sereals was waiting with a dry erase. He was the one coaching up the whole bench once things got ugly.

So to summarize the differences:
1.) Expectations were higher against Boise, and victory was much closer to our grasp.
2.) Team had to travel back from FedEx, making it an even shorter week.
3.) Furman isn't as good a team as JMU.

I don't. MLB has to play aggressive to flourish, and we had to account for those fast slot guys, pulling the safeties out of position to make that play. The way you suggest is 20 yards per carry, zeke or barrett and our D is dead after the first half...

# | Locker Room Wrap: Hokies' Defense Befuddled by OSU Blocking Schemes, Playmakers Seems like we've seen all the stuff that OSU threw at us before. To me the big difference was the NFL QB. Kid had a laser. Kid was Roethlesburgeresque (sp) in his ability to deflect our defenders.
When we play GT we don't take the outside pitch runner, we hit the QB. If we had taken the QB all night I'm not sure Cardale would have even flinched at the punishment... was he taking it or giving it?
I'd hate to see Paul Johnson try to sign kids like that at QB. The scat quick pitch and shuck and jive types are just too small to take the punishment we deliver.
They don't play Cardale and I think Bud's defense prevails.... maybe not with Brewer going down... but the D plays a hell of a game.
Drop 42 points and 560+ yards on a Bud Foster defense, and any mistakes made will be instantly forgotten.
