Cam Phillips seems to have a chance to be a difference maker from day 1. Same with Williams at RB and Shai would too, but he should make sure he is 100% from his ACL which may give a leg up to Williams this spring.
Malleck back at TE along with Cline and good competition everywhere else on the offense should breed the best possible offense with the guys we got. Should be exciting... can't wait for spring ball!

# | Hokies one of 3 biggest losers of National Signing Day per CollegeFootballTalk We may not like hearing it, but we kind of were losers on NSD. This isn't the first website I've read that on. And this whole thing about the "sinking ship in Blacksburg," we may not like it or think it, but to an outsider looking in, that does seem to be the case. The worst part about it is there is a specific group of kids that see that kind of stuff on the media, and they are called recruits. We definitely are not what we once were, and to those who do not literally wake up and study VT football, it does seem that we are on the decline, which is a very very bad thing. We can't compare Florida to ourselves because we all know about the SEC bias - no matter how poorly they play, they're an SEC team, and ESPN will lop that up. 18 year old kids watch ESPN. That's why I believe if we don't get this offensive incompetence figured out within the next one to two years, it could REALLY damage us for the future. It doesn't matter how optimistic the fans might be, the media is a driving force in today's game.
Seems to me our biggest shift in terms of offensive recruiting is actually working to find and recruit position specific players outside of the RB. In the past it felt like we wanted to find athletic guys and see where they could fit (guys that often played multiple positions in HS, or the infamous TE to Oline plan), and I think that the offense as a whole will benefit from having players who have focused their development on specific roles. The WRs in this class are all guys who primarily played the position in HS which should lend to them more quickly acclimating to to the college level, and I think this will hold especially true on the Oline. I think the improvement will come from better prepared athletes who hopefully will be able to contribute sooner than some of the guys we've in the past found and worked with.
I think that this next fall we should hope for more consistency, the scheme was obviously a vast improvement from the prior coaching staff so I would like to believe that the guys that will now have 2 years in it and some of the young guys fit into solid roles will be able to have a more consistent offense. We had too many ups and downs and miscues this past fall to be considered anything other than consistently mediocre to poor. I think the improvement will show up this fall, but it won't be some drastic improvement. I think we should hope for major improvements to start showing in 2015 and for 2016 the offense needs to be the true compliment to our defense that we've yearned for.

I brought up Maryland in response to VT needing to be BCS relevant to bring in the top guys in-state.
Maryland has brought in the top guy/guys 2 of the last 3 years. As we know, Maryland hasn't been relevant in over a decade. You don't always have to have the best program to get recruits, you just have to know how to sell your program. Randy Edsall is selling.
If VT had the same results, we would have 2 of these guys on our roster right now, and we would be a better team for it - (Eli Harold, Christian Hackenberg, DaShawn Hand)

If forced to choose between Harrison and Isaiah Ford, I would most definitely choose Ford.
Why? To me this just sounds like you're trying to justify it and make it feel better? I feel pretty confident in saying that Harrison is a better WR than Ford. Are you saying you don't like Harrison because of the baggage he may bring? Because sadly most top athletes nowadays bring personal baggage - they're all divas. We can't keep not wanting these players because of that, we have to trust the coaches more that they wouldn't allow it to get out of hand.

He's just too skinny for a D-I QB right now.
True, but I don't know how he'd develop (adding weight, different techniques, etc) as a whip compared to rover/free. If Bud will leave him on the field, awesome sauce. If Bud continues to go to his nickle package (and yes, that is likely pretty reliant on how much he trusts his whip to cover), keep him at safety, don't let him get too big, teach him DB techniques.

2008: Bama signed Burton Scott, Julio Jones, and Tyler Love. Julio Jones was a 1st Round pick but Burton Scott transferred to South Alabama. Tyler Love never really made it to the starting lineup.

EDIT: Scout considered Mark Barron a 5 star while Rivals considered him a 4 star. He was a first round pick. Scout also considered DJ Fluker a 4 star while Rivals rated him at 5 stars. Phillip Sims was considered a 5 star by Rivals and I believe he's now at UVA.
I'm going to say that I REALLLLY hope that Leal doesn't start. I feel it's a waste to have a different quarterback for 3 straight years. Even though everyone says "oh, he was thrust into the action against UCLA, that isn't a fair judgement," I still believe I saw enough from him to know that he should not be our starting QB come next season. He may not have been accustomed to game time speed, but he still made decisions that a guy who's been on the team for three or four years shouldn't make.
As with every new QB, there will be growing pains, bad plays, etc., so why put in a quarterback who will go through them and then graduate? It would just repeat again the next year. I say pick your QB of the future, and unless he literally cannot throw the football worth a damn, you gut it out with him for the season.
The 2015 and 2016 seasons are the seasons we believe we have a shot to be something special, don't jeopardize that because we wanted 8 wins instead of 7 this year. Let the quarterback play all 4 years like Aaron Murray, and then by his junior and senior season when the recruits are all upperclassmen, you have an experienced playcaller at the helm.

If he's got good enough DB skills to play free safety, then they wouldn't need to take him off the field. Just change his responsibility for the play call.
You're right. I still don't see your point. And I don't see how it's a counter-point to my point.
My point was that UVA, UMD, and UVA are all examples of not being able to keep the top talent in-state. I never was comparing VT to UMD, or vice versa. I didn't even initially bring up UMD...
I don't like this as much simply cause I want him on the field 100% of the time. Seems like he'd be a good rover.

I tend to be on the side that thinks our coaches should stay out of the sort of grey area of 7-on-7 recruiting but I'm all for Tyrod (or any other former player for that matter) acting as an advocate in these leagues.
Maybe it's sheer coincidence but the timing of this tweet is funny as there has been so much recent talk about these leagues.

Scott Loeffler was very high on Ryan Malleck before he got hurt and, as much as we like Kalvin Cline, he's still a little undersized. I think, if he comes back at 100% (or even 95%), Ryan Malleck will be the #1 tight end with Cline #2.
I'd agree with everything except QB and TE. QB, I like many others, am not sold on Leal. That'll be a battle to watch, for sure.
TE, no question at all Malleck starts, barring injury. He's going to be the biggest offensive weapon we have this year. Yes, Cline did a great job and had a very productive year for a VT tight end. However, he's not the consistent player, especially when it comes to in-line blocking, that Malleck is. There's a reason Lefty was planning on using RM so much this year and his loss cannot be overstated as a huge blow to the offense.
I expect someone other than Leal to start, honestly. One of the talented freshmen, someone like Bucky, who's been here a while and is kind of a sleeper... not a clue. I just think one of them will beat Leal out.
