As legit of a point as this may be, let's not forget that even Andrew Luck redshirtted his freshman year. I'm all for giving the young guys a fair shot, but let's not be too quick to toss guys into the fire.

This x1000 hence the sexy legs. Why would we waste our time with a QB that has less than 20 minutes game experience. We might as well start fresh, unless Le-Alllll (lol) wins the job outright. I don't see that happening but weirder things have happened. Ford is a good QB and we have had the discussion maybe 1000 times in the last week *'s mean nothing other than what they were against HS players. Leal was a 3* or 4* but in College he obviously isn't anywhere near that or else he would be playing.
Its like here's your 4* and then the minute you step onto the College field its taken away and you either prove your worth or you go home and find that newspaper/online article that still shows you're that 3 or 4* and live vicariously through that. Yes its tough but the athlete's/players coming out of HS now-a-days are freakishly talented and a guy that has sat on the bench for 3 years doesn't look so hot unlike those legs above

How do you think Stanford and Bama felt after their respective BCS bowl games? Even the elite teams aren't immune to heartbreak.
I have to disagree...at least on Ford. No one wins Gatorade Player of the Year in a state and goes to the Elite 11 and doesn't have something. Look at the guys film and his stats. I think you are off on Leal. Also, look at the Sugar Bowl last night. Trevor Knight, a redshirt freshman just tore up the defending national champs.
Knight is 6'3" and 195 lbs....Ford is 6'3" and 198 lbs. They both run a 4.6.
I don't have a problem with Ford and Durkin redshirting, but to to think in todays college football landscape that a true freshman can't succeed is just wrong.
IF we can get the running game going, it will take alot of pressure off the Hokie QB. Now, thats a big IF...
I think the ceiling is higher with Ford or Durkin, so you might as well go for it. Of course, Ford needs to beat out Leal fair and square.
The problem is that we're 0-3 in 'down to the wire games'. There was a clear difference in (on the field) talent against Stanford/UCLA. That was understandable. The close games hurt the most.

Worth mentioning: From 1994-2006, the all-powerful Notre Dame had a 9 game bowl LOSING streak. Ouch.
Also worth mentioning: UVA has won a TOTAL of 7 bowl games and own a delicious record of 7-11.

So there ya have it, out of the 126 FBS teams, all of 21 have as many or more bowl wins as VT. You may notice that the majority of said teams are the big boys with all the financial/recruiting/other advantages that have been discussed. Not bad company to keep.
*EDIT* Just for funsies, had the Sugar bowl gone the other way, the number of teams with # bowl wins >= VT's drops to 13.
*EDIT* UNLV has been removed from the ranks of the bowl unbeatens. Sad day for the rebels.

Most of dukes players were 2 and 3 stars coming out of highschool. Crowder is prolly dukes best player and he was a middle of the road 3 star. They just got coached up really well. And have developed nicely
Go back and look at their recruiting ranks for those players. We're the rankings off for those players coming out of high school? Maybe. Were they coached up to play to that level? Probably. We use to do the same. The guy steering the ship sets the direction.

Charlie Strong might be going to the NFL so Louisville might be out, FSU he could be buried on the bench... UF is a joke and people are decommitting left and right and then there's USC who every year does something stupid for attention...

And conversely, that is why it is easier for us to recruit defensive players and running backs. Our offense has been lackluster and our defense has been lights out.
Maybe Ford or Durkin can change this up for us. I do think we need to open things up offensively a little bit for sure.

I believe we end up starting motley but will play durkin for red zone packages. Ford will challenge big time for 2015. He just isn't physical enough to take the beating yet. It will be a similar year as 2008 from the qb position. The freshman can't take the pounding and we would be unwise to subject their development to it 100% of the snaps.
I understand your argument that inconsistency comes with inexperience, but I respectfully disagree. When you have MULTIPLE chances to win a game, I expect our boys to take advantage of one of them. FGs should be gimmes, and needed to be for this team. We took advantage of 1/2 of our scoring opportunities against Duke. That's not TDs 1/2 of the time we're in the redzone... we went 2/5 on FG opportunities (I'm counting the pic in the endzone as an 'FG opportunity'), that's not good at all, no matter your experience.
So its understandable that we lost to Maryland...? Consistency is a problem.

That is what I meant by "opportunity to be the guy".
And even with attempting more passes, we are not completing them for huge numbers or points. No one in their right mind has been amazed by our offense. It has been tough to watch.
Thats why I say its a tough sell when a recruit is also considering a team like Clemson, Florida State, Oregon, Texas A&M, Missouri, etc. You go to those teams and you know you can put up huge numbers as a wide receiver.
In my opinion, the experience argument doesn't really hold a lot of water. How much game experience has Leal had, little to none. He looked like a fish out of water against UCLA. He has practice experience, but only one year under Loeffler. If you read between the lines, Loeffer and Logan were critical at the quality of coaching received by Thomas under O'Cain. Leal is really only one year ahead of Ford, Durkin, or any of the other quarterbacks. Ford comes from a very solid high school program and was on the the camp circuit receiving all sorts of specialized coaching. Ford will have the benefit of spring ball. Leal's never received reps as the guy in college.
I'm not saying Leal is more experienced, but it's not a landslide. Also, consider the upside of playing Ford or any of the younger QBs. Unless you're confident Leal is an asset and not a liability, why not struggle with a player who will be in the program for at least 2 more years?
If recruiting rankings were accurate, would we even be talking about turning our legit 4 star QB recruit into a tight end?
If they were so accurate, Bucky would be the front runner for the job next year and we wouldn't even be talking about Ford or Leal.
