Yeah, I'm not big on player bashing but the field position game isn't as effective when you don't have a good kicker. You have to be able to finish drives, and we seem to only have a couple finishing moves each game. We botched one TD on an illegal motion, and missed two field goals. Long drives that eat clock and only end in 3 are fine as long as we have this defense. We can't afford zeros though.

Haha, you're right. Those were two clean hits. If RVDs block wasn't a block in the back, those definitely weren't.

Interesting - I don't recall Loeffler suiting up yesterday and throwing into double- and triple-coverage all day.

I do recall seeing receivers wide all day open as a result of a very good offensive scheme designed by Loeffler. Perhaps you missed that?

Let's Fucking do it.

I move we keep going with Lefty, we've seen some good stuff out of him, and I think that things will get better. However, the thought of a Foster/Malzhan coaching staff does send shivers down my spine. Is Fat Frank Beamer allowed to come too?

IMO Chip Kelly, Gus Malzanh and Chad Morris are the three most innovative offensive coaches in the last decade of college football. There's a reason Chip is in the NFL and Gus is a head coach in the SEC. Morris might pull a Bud Foster and stay at Clemson for sometime, but there will be many opportunities for him to advance his career in the next few years.

But I very much agree with Joe, Auburn's success is not at all surprising.

I have a needlepoint hand stitched "2007" up on my wall for looking at angrily.

Thanks, I was gonna include that but I didn't wanna bash Logan and Cody in the same comment.

Just a few points to consider -

If you're a recruit for the defense, I don't know how you could dislike what you saw yesterday. How could you not want to play for a Top 5 defense and possibly the best DC in the country?

If you're a recruit for the offense, I think you could plainly see some major opportunities to play early and often. The offensive scheme yesterday was not the issue - we had guys open all day but LT threw into double and triple coverage most of the game. We were lucky to end up with only 4 INTs. Just like we've credited LT in the past for carrying the team on his back and willed us to win, he was way off yesterday and deserves the bulk of the blame for losing to Duke.

If you're a kicker and saw Journell miss 2 out of 3 FG attempts, you KNOW Tech has a MAJOR opportunity to start next year.

Oh, one more point - if a home crowd had a major effect on recruiting, how does Miami continue to land top recruits each and every year?
Miami Home Crowd

Things change dude. Baylor is a legit program. Use them all you want as an example of a team that should be less credible than us. I know I would prefer for us to be winning more games. That's what I would always prefer. But on the otherhand, we've been bowl eligible for 21 straight years. I would way rather have a successful season every year than have a few good seasons and then burn out.

Agree with both of you. While it sucks that the Hokies lost, I am now way more excited for next Saturday than if they won. It makes the season way more fun to lose some and then come back and win even more.

My wife actually had an insightful comment yesterday about this, so credit goes to her.
"Any kid that wants to play bad enough in Blacksburg won't care, someone that wants to play elsewhere won't care, and any kid that is swayed by one game is someone we don't want anyway."

And with all this said and done...
I'll just leave this here.

Ok so I'm on the iPhone and can't embed. Or I'm dumb.

I feel ya there. On the other hand maybe he wants to avoid arm punts?

I feel like we just need to start handing the ball to Derrick Hopkins. Yeah. You heard me. Give the ball to Derrick Hopkins.

I believe this game is way more the exception than the rule; we'll rebound and there's not one opponent on our remaining conference schedule that looks invincible.

And this is one of the reasons I want to experience an Ohio State game in person. Amazing.

Honest to god man. This right here I think puts into words what we all know in our hearts. We love this team because there's a soul to it. It is going to break your heart from time to time. It is going to make you shit your pants in fear even if it does go undefeated in close games. Being an Alabama fan must be the most boring shit known to man.

Yep, I am preventing myself from reading any negative stuff about this team on any site at all this week. Instead I'm going to sit back and be happy to be 6-2 and controlling our own destiny in the Coastal.

I did note Exum on the field and the movement coordinated and communicated between him and other Defenders lined up against WR on his side of the field.
The movement had to be confusing to the WRs. Who was covering and how, looking like they were going to get smashed at LOS then backing out 7 yards.

They shut down the passing game, it wasn't luck.

Football is fucking nuts

I totally get where you're coming from though. Here were my take aways though:

  1. We have a bit of a running game. At least that's something
  2. This Duke defense looks more than a little legit. They're having a good day, we're having a bad. This won't go well.

It's always hard to say what's going to happen with a game. I'm not really surprised by this loss. Doesn't mean it didn't hurt though. But I'm glad it hurts. It means I care still. It also means that they guys who aren't on their couch hurt too. It means the guys out there on the field hurt. If this team is who I think they are, they won't just sit down, look at each other and say "Damn you Lefty, we need to fire Beamer, we need to fire Loeffler, we need to bench Thomas," the way everyone around here has been.

They're going to look at each and say, "We need to give more. We need to play harder. We need to prepare better. Let's go out there, and play our nuts off." This is mostly directed toward the offense. I don't think the defense can possibly play their nuts off any more than they already are. But from what I've seen of this offense (with some very notable exceptions), it's a much tougher unit than last years unit. It's possibly a much tougher unit than any I've seen in a long time. I don't think it's the most talented unit we've ever had, far from it in fact. But there's something very special about this year's team.

Very true. But I'm just thinking about the premise for VT. Who knows if it would have sparked something? I'm just kind of playing the what if game here.
