That's why the rules (basic offensive plays, "base defense") so heavily favored the defense.
The defenders knew what plays were coming and could react very quickly, much quicker then a real game where they'd have to worry about counters. Those blitzes by the LB's in the interior gaps are part of the base defense. When given a certain formation and when seeing certain keys (like Linemen stepping parallel to the LOS) the interior LB crashes the playside A gap.
If Loeffler had his whole offense, he could have attacked that rule with more play action plays, or switch up blocking assignments, or throw some counters (like traps and cut-back runs). But with only a handful of plays, there wasn't much he could do but continue to run right at the teeth of the defense.
Still disappointing how little push the Oline had. It's one thing to hit all your assignments, it's another to dominate your man once you reach them. Don't be surprised this season if the Hokie offensive line struggles often to get vertical movement up front.
Any way someone could put dancing beamer in this one? I'm not skilled enough at gifs yet.

I will upvote anyone who uses "tits" as an adjective
Yeah, the ACC is great. The only thing I don't like about it is this whole 15 1/2 members thing.
Could this have any effect on the creation of an ACC network (it's own channel), or are the two unrelated?
I've long thought this was the route the ACC should take. Given the amount of major cities/population in their footprint, and how many different sports are offered, I can't imagine how having their own channel wouldn't be a huge money maker.
Great move by the ACC. As a fan of all Virginia Tech athletic teams -not just football- the ACC is where we want to be.
Or if you are a #VT4SEC fan, that she CAN'T leave you but can bone any dude she wants right in front of you...
I was late into the game so I missed the play but that pass play to Stanford in orange's opening drive was placed perfectly.
It's official: http://www.theacc.com/genrel/042213aaa.html.
I mean, this is not a bad thing. If Maryland lawyered down their exit fee, and schools like FSU and Clemson looked to bolt, there's a chance, albiet small, VT ends up in a bad spot. For example, the SEC reconsiders their position and accepts new members from existing states. Or only a couple of more dominos fall, and VT + Weaver remain loyal to a watered down league.
I don't know the legal definition of "maim" but isn't the point of getting into a fight to maim the other person? Especially if you are defending your GF? Maybe I've been fighting wrong...
Somewhere in the world, Marcus Davis is reading this and chuckling at the thought of blocking.
Our best offense is punting.
So basically that's like telling your wife she can leave you, but she has to come back for sex whenever you want it.

French - I have an overall question for you (since you are...by far...the best expert in this arena): Given VT's current roster and recruiting base, what kind of offensive scheme would we be best suited to run? Just seems like year-after-year (and yes, this is a new regeme) we are looking at a system that just isn't "comfortable" (blocking is awkward, passing isn't smooth and refined, running is too reliant on "perfect" blocking). I've posted this in other areas, and maybe it's a bigger question than a reply.
It seems to generate the most interest when talking about LT. He's not a classic drop back, accurate passer...his strength is running over people (i.e. read option) and being able to throw (effectively) after the run threat is there (more like the Tim Tebow system). Is our system best designed for his strengths? Don Shula was a Hall of Fame coach because he adjusted his system to the players he had around him.
As always, tits write-up French!
Let's hope we can turn a corner this summer and play like a team.
Is anyone really surprised that the offense hasn't immediately turned a corner? Good things take time.
The defense will be our crutch, what else is new? Fortunately, we also have a proven kicker (Journell) and punter (Hughes), and we saw last year how those can save a game.

French, how different is the zone blocking scheme we want to run compared with Mike Shanahan's stretch? I understand Shanahan wants the back to get a little further out before cutting it up, but are the two formations similar in other regards? The reason I ask is because talking with a coach or two up in DC might be beneficial for our O-linemen, considering Alfredo (Morris) proved how effective their scheme can be.
I feel smarter every time I read one of French's video breakdowns. Excellent work as always, and it lifted my mood to see that perhaps we just need some refinement to really start seeing some consistency. The guys will have to work hard over the summer, but I feel a bit more optimistic than I did when leaving the stadium on Saturday.
Here's a good article explaining what Grant of Media Rights is: http://businessofcollegesports.com/2012/12/03/grants-of-television-rights-not-increased-exit-fees-are-the-solution-to-realignment-frenzy/
If the ACC accepts this, and it's unanimous, I think we can safely say that the realignment era will come to a close for a while.
Blitzing allowed on short yardage situations. Might have even been just on 3rd and short.
BREAKING: Andrea Adelson of the ESPN.com ACC blog has just written a post about Michael Holmes' arrest. However, upon further review, it has been determined that she used exactly what was written in an AP article. So in conclusion, the ESPN ACC bloggers still don't give a shit about VT and the rest of the ACC, unless it is something about FSU, Clemson, or SuckstobeU University, and they will continue to claim that linking a story to one of Bitter's articles is sufficient work for the blog and its readers.
So I've seen people say that the defense wasn't allowed to blitz in the spring game, but you pointed out some fairly clear blitzing linebackers. Is that just the nature of Foster's defense? Was the defense in fact allowed to blitz as long as it wasn't anything too exotic? Did Frank just allow it to force Loeffler to react to blitzes he wasn't expecting? Just a question that popped up as I was reading. I don't know enough about football terminology to know what would constitute our "base defense", and what would be something extra Bud dialed in.
As always, thanks French for the effort you put into these. Looking forward to the summer of knowledge.

Dude, don't try to engage the "anti-LTers" in conversation. They don't listen to reason. They just trust their gut.
