Pros: More flexibility to schedule good non-conference games; more home games; FSU Clemson and GT don't get totally dicked over for playing their annual SEC rivals

Cons: Play NC State, FSU, Clemson, Syracuse, Maryland, and Wake Forest way less; potentially hurts strength of schedule for playoff bid (that is up to the individual AD's scheduling philosophies)

Logistically, I think it was the only way to go... I'm cool with it

Also, I'm happy about our permanent partners in basketball.... UVA and Miami. Way better than UVA and BC, in my opinion. I hate playing at BC...

To me, if we went full on Big XII spread, it would reflect on the defense before long. I feel like when I watch an SEC game, that's what Frank wants.

Who are some of the assistants at Georgia, South Carolina, or even TCU? Those teams always seem to move ball just fine and the QB does run in those offenses. Meanwhile the D keeps that toughness from practicing against an O like all week.

Like I've seen mentioned on here this week, you can predict what play is coming a lot of the time, and if drunk guy in the stands can do it, then most DCs worth their salt can as well. Yes pound it, be hardnosed, just dont be so predictable!

Now if I could just pick than Chip Kelly all day long, but this is a realistic replacement thread so yeah, SEC or even pro style assistants.

Do we miss Ricky Bustle?

"Frank will not fire/demote anyone on his staff and Stinespring is too ignorant to realize what's going on, as has been the case for the last 8 years."

In order for Fridge to take an OC job, an OC job has to be open. In order for an OC job has to be open, the current OC has to either quit, get fired, or get reassigned. Since that has not happened, nor probably will happen anytime soon, it is a moot suggestion.

"If you increased the budget by $300-400k annually (or by whatever an OC of Fridge's caliber would make), the ROI would be more than 100%. Besides more wins, everyone would be so ecstatic donations would cover it."

I hate to put my CPA hat on here but the accounting for the program does not work this way, and I feel like I have to clarify this before this suggestion gets out of hand. VT Football is likely an enterprise fund within a not for profit entity (VT). In order for what you suggest to occur, the decision to find someone and pay them X would have to be made before the fiscal year budget is approved (which is before the fiscal year itself). Then in order to cover the expenses of OC salary X, donations of Y would have to be obtained either before or when the new OC is hired.

The point? IF Fridge wanted a larger salary than Stinespring (which I doubt), Steger/Weaver/Board of Directors would have to make the concious decision to find someone new and pay them salary X, which they won't do without the blessing of Frank. This means, before anything happens on the weaver/steger/BOD front, Frank would have to make the decision to EVENTUALLY fire the OC and pay the new one, which he won't do.

All this being said I'm going throw out another suggestion for our new OC: Batman.

I agree that there needs to be some changes made on the offense, but at the same time, we shouldn't necessarily be all doom and gloom right now. Honestly, I know we were all HOPING that we could pull a title run out of our asses, as we hope before every season, but WHO in their right mind thought that this was going to be "our season"?

Additionally, yeah, it sucks we lost to Cincy that way. It was scarily similar to the way Boise St ended. Maybe FedEx just hates our freakin' guts. But there ARE positives people. It may not have started to develop until the second half, but our offense started to get a little rhythm going. I saw great things out of our running backs, and even though we didn't win, I think they had breakout performances. Defense played OUTSTANDING football with the exception of a few broken coverages from a patchwork secondary. It's just as Bud said, the media hyped this defense. He said we had a "chance to be good." The front 7 performed well in containing Legeaux, and I think they keep up that fire and aggression throughout the season. We'll need it against FSU and Clemson.

So, let's get our shit straight and take the rest of the season one game at a time, just as our team should. Let's kill the Tar Heels at their place. We own it anyway. They're 0-4 at home against us. Let's make it 0-5.

interview with all the coaches with Burnop. Bud had the best line, calling the tackling "piss poor" which was repeated by Burnop to every defensive player he interviewed (Taylor, Jarrett, JGW).

But Stiney was quite up front that the offense was failing and it was his fault for not getting them prepared. I can't remember verbatim what he said, but I remember thinking "He does a much better job at accepting responsibility than he ever gets credit for."

I think the Fridge is the only chance we actually have at change. There is a certain comfort level there obviously with him and Frank...it could be worked discreetly under the table next time they are on Lake Oconee. The idea of not firing anyone and just bringing him in is key there.

If you increased the budget by $300-400k annually (or by whatever an OC of Fridge's caliber would make), the ROI would be more than 100%. Besides more wins, everyone would be so ecstatic donations would cover it.

Besides, Fridge would definitely be game as long as his health is good. We should start a grass roots campaign.

1. Curt Newsome and Mike O'Cain to cushy, well paying, front-office jobs.
2. Stinespring back to offensive line.
3. Fridge to offensive coordinator / QBs coach.
4. Hire more young blood.

Fair point; I should have probably been more specific. LT3's abilities and the WR corps are connected in that the former has to be on par in order for the later to deliver. My point is that if the air attack as a whole entity had the confidence of our ground attack, we would have put up much more production than we did.

We keep using words like "passion" "responsibility" "give em' hell". How about words like consistency, tackling, first downs, points. I don't care about the coaches' demeanor, I want wins. I love Bud as much as any Hokie fan but the defense gave up huge plays to both Cincy and Pitt, he needs to get it corrected and I know he will ache until he does. I wish I could say the same about the offense.

I think the arrangement Dubya talks about with Jarret moving down with Fuller could work, but it's worth a shot even if it doesn't. The team is 3-2 and hasn't faced the top three (or four) offenses it will face this season, so switching it up isn't exactly going to ruin a good thing. I also agree with what some others have said: even though it would be childish to write this season off after two OOC losses, we've got to start looking toward that opener next year, everyone else in the nation will be. The personnel as currently constructed won't get it done, period, and that goes for more than just the secondary.

Thats not true... Our coaches still care about next week. It seems like thats all they care about. "That was a tough loss, but we'll get the next one!"

...Fuckin joke

Even though Jarret has been incredible back at Safety, I say put him at corner, and then place Cole back at safety with Exum, and then obviously leave Kyle where he is. If this doesn't happen, It sets us up for failure this year and next year aswell. If we don't move Exum now, we won't ever move him. I just really don't think Bonner is capable, but I am slightly biased since I've disliked him since he came in for Jayron against Clemson.

Does anyone else have a secondary that they prefer better?

I guess the problem I have with that is: why have such a small margin of error? I don't believe that other successful offensive systems rely on such precision by all 11 players. It appears that our scheme requires perfection from all 11 players or else we get nothing - perfection or disaster. I just don't see that from an Oregon, Boise, WVU, Clemson, Bama, etc. I think the most effective systems allow for some inevitable imperfection while maximizing opportunity. Then again, we haven't really had a "system" under Beamer. I would like to see something similar to what Peterson or Snyder implements - it seems like those would fit our philosophy and the players we recruit.

Having a "future top ten draft pick" at QB who can actually hit the 8-yard crossing route and 10-yard out route with any kind of consistency is a great place to start. It's time to stop looking at Logan as untouchable because of his size/hype and start thinking about what we need to do to win EVERY GAME. (that should be the goal, I feel like this coaching staff has forgotten that)

I agree with vthokie, you can't put Manning in right now. Those two plays he got burnt on back to back in the Cincy game were bad, even for a true freshman. Can't get too mad at a kid that isn't ready to play major college football as an 18 year old, but he isn't a solution this season either. What's more, when he got beat for the touchdown there was no anger or frustration that he expected to make the play and messed up, there was just that "look" that he really was in over his head. Maybe switching in one of the safeties is an option but I believe that Bonner has played the worst of any starter in the secondary by far, even with Exum's struggles.

Shane went off on the refs yesterday too. It was nice to see some passion and outspokenness coming from an offensive coach too.
