Way to early to say this

I mean, is it? Our best year offensively by far was with Jerrod taking snaps. We saw significant dropoff with JJ and Willis, and then an immediate shot in the arm with Hooker. I think it's absolutely fair to say this offense doesn't work without a QB who makes defenses respect their running threat, which is all OP is really saying.

And now I'm picturing a guy with the nickname University Terrance. If there isn't such a guy in Blacksburg, there should be.

For real. At least have the decency to snort your line off the inside of stripper's thigh like a civilized human being.

My favorite thing about that movie is that they had to change the ending because the Sox finally won the Series the season they filmed it.

So am I.

Overpursuing, getting caught out of position, making the wrong read, dumb penalities... That's lack of trust. You aren't comfortable with your teammates and you're trying to do too much to overcompensate.

Being slow and sloppy and waiting for someone else to make the play is a separate animal, and indicative of a much bigger problem.

I wholeheartedly disagree with that assertion. There is more than freshman mistakes at play here. Inexperienced players at P5 schools should still be fundamentally sound. On a fundamental level, we are unprepared to be playing P5 football. So again I say, it doesn't matter what our record is, or whether we make a bowl game. What matters is getting better on a fundamental level. That should be the sum total of our focus as a program right now. Whenever doing what is needed to win this season is at odds with the long term fundamental development of our players, we have to emphasize the latter if we are to see significant growth.

Stop. Caring. About. "Saving." This. Season.

We need to stop this notion that this season can be saved. Even if we scrape together five more wins and preserve the bowl streak, there are deep-seared fundamental issues with our program that need to be addressed. This is not something that gets fixed midyear.

This season is lost. The whole program feels lost right now. We need long term solutions, not quick fixes. At this point I don't care if we go 2-10 or 10-2, I'm more concerned with what needs to be fixed.

To that end, here's what I do:

  • Hooker and King start the rest of the way, turnovers be damned. Willis and McClease are not the future of this program.
  • QP gets meaningful snaps every game. That includes throwing passes, running the whole scheme. He's the backup, not the wildcat.
  • The scoreboard doesn't exist. Our record doesn't exist. All that exists is the current drive. We just became the only team in the ACC that's playing in a developmental league.

Regardless of who our coach is next season, our return to respectability hinges on getting the current roster ready to play P5 football. That's my only concern moving forward.

Honestly, it seems worse than that to me. Making mistakes because you're trying to do everything is a common theme among young defenses that haven't gelled.

What I'm seeing is defenders playing slow because they hope someone else makes the play instead. That's horrifying.

I was with you up until the end. I'm convinced Hooker needs to start the rest of the season. He's still raw as a passer, but he can make the zone read, and his threat as a runner will open up the passing game for him a bit. He didn't pull the trigger to Hazleton, but he got us the first down with his feet. We need more of that to build on. It's not going to bring us back from down 21, but it is our best shot to develop a QB who can run this offense. At this point I'm done worrying about how many wins are left on the schedule, and more concerned with developing a QB.

If Cutcliffe and Jerry Kill shake hands, the universe will end because the universe can't handle that much aw shucks niceness in the same place at the same time.

Literally no championship team in the last ten years uses this philosophy. Bama and Clemson have created the new normal in college football, hiring tons of "advisors" and "assistants" who work behind the scenes. This hire, and embracing this model in general, is long overdue in Blacksburg.

now that the wheels have totally fallen off

This... This blows my mind.

We've finished zero regular seasons below .500 in the past 26 years. We have players on our team this year who have played for a conference championship. We have appeared in the AP top 25 at some point in the season for 25 of the past 26 seasons. If you think mediocrity is the wheels falling off, I have bad news for you. We could be Rutgers.

The wheels have come nowhere near falling off just yet. And if they ever do, I firmly suspect this fanbase is in no mental state to be able to handle it. There are some long overdue chickens coming home to roost.

I'm not particularly closer to Minnesota, but I'm in the heart of B1G country, and everyone had the most positive things to say about Kill while he was in South Canada. He is a quality human being with an incredible work ethic.
