I agree, if Tech doesnt win those last two games, or even against Miami I dont think we would really be having this discussion.
I think the fact that he got so many of the votes with a 1 - 7 stretch through the early part of 2016 speaks to how this team really turned it on at the end.
Miami went from 10 -8 in the ACC last year to 13 - 5 this year with some big time wins over Duke, Notre Dame, Louisville, UVA, so Id say its pretty well deserved but it was certainly close.
Still surprised they offer 3 millions by year three.
Backloaded as hell, though. 48% of the contract's total value comes in the last two years. It looks like this is structured on the assumption that Lovie won't be around by year five of the contract.
Compare to Fuente's contract, which is worth a combined $20.45 million (compared to Lovie's $21 million), but increases incrementally only from $3.2 to $3.65 million over the same period of time. Fuente's is a "let's build a lasting relationship" deal, while Lovie's contract dangles the carrot.
Stiney has been pulling down major coin for nearly two decades. I highly doubt that his current demotion will do much to upset his living standards, assuming that he wasn't absolutely stupid with managing his money.
Seems like Illinois got their own Whit(man).
I'll show myself out.
I am somewhat surprised by the pay scale for a coach at a mid bottom BIG school though. That's a hefty paycheck.
Smith agreed to a six-year deal with payments of $2 million annually for 2016 and 2017, $3 million for 2018, $4 million for 2019 and $5 million annually for both 2020 and 2021. He will have opportunities to earn more through incentive bonuses
let's all remember that this is the same group (at least by association) that decided Al Groh and Mike London both deserved COY awards at some point in their careers. As such I don't expect to agree with their choice, you know, ever.
Huge hire on his very first day on the job. Crazy.
An interesting choice too. I'm skeptical of Lovie as a college coach just because he's been out of it for so long, but the man is a damn good football coach. Even if it seemed his defensive schemes were getting figured out by the end of his NFL run, I'd imagine he'd be able to turn it around in the college game and field some solid teams. His recruiting is about as big of a question mark as you could imagine, but Illinois was never going to get an all-around perfect coach, and his NFL pedigree should help immensely in that department. I don't think they could have hoped for much more.
Also, their AD is also named WHIT(man).
I kept saying throughout the season that this team was going to be so good once it all started to click.
Well, boy did it start to click towards the end. We're most certainly a NIT-at-best team this year, but that's ok. I'd much rather this team have the experience of a potential long run in the NIT than a likely 1-and-done NCAA bid. We're still very young and that experience would pay off big in the coming years where we should be a NCAA caliber team.
However, if they did this same article last year, this wouldn't describe VT very closely. WE HAVE ENTERED THE VAGUE DESCRIPTION STATUS only up from here.
We are who we are basically a
500.581 (.556)team
FTFY
Larranaga had Miami ranked Top 10 for a very good chunk of this season. Historically, that program is pretty terrible as well, so to see that happen for them is very impressive.
Don't get me wrong, Buzz taking us from the bottom to the top half is damn impressive on its own, but lets not try to undersell the job Larranaga is doing down in Miami.
Ok. Definitely not the L-Ville game. Lee balled out and just was red hot , but we scraped and fought. But the other two I thought we were the more complete team.

Illinois has selected former Bears coach Lovie Smith as its next football coach after athletic director Josh Whitman posted two photos on Monday morning with Smith at Memorial Stadium.
Well this AD works fast.
It's memorable because it's special and rare. If we rushed after beating Jacksonville State it wouldn't be a memorable experience for very long. I love court storming and am not in the camp trying to ban it, but I do think there's a time and a place for it. Beating Miami soundly was not the time for it.
reductio ad absurdum to a T here. The guy was simply saying it would've been cool if two other games had gone differently, and you decide go on a tangent about changing the course of history. Lol I guess I get your point?
Gustafson is ranked #27 in the country. Any chance he gets an at-large bid?
Well said ltrpeter as always however - Over Ruled!
According to the breakout on HokieSports, it was Mastriani and Gustafson. Coach Dresser said that while his guys performed at their best, NC State was the better team yesterday.
Gustafson. Needed 3rd, got 4th
I'd say VT did ok against the 2009 Bama defense.
I understand that sentiment. Regarding the Galaxy, I think they might actually be a better team without Dos Santos. He & Keane want to play in a similar way and it ends up messing with their spacing... but with Magee in his place, he allows Keane to make his runs and then Magee drifts into the open spaces.
DCU will figure things out. Might be some growing pains (much like Buzzketball this year), but I think they'll be a good time once they get it together.
2006 could have been very special if someone hadn't gotten stompy in the Gator Bowl.
Hokies really have something to be proud of. Forget the great record, possible NIT birth etc. These guys played very hard all season, even in some of the losses. Which really impressed me. I watched the PITT loss (BOOOOOO!) from start to finish, and VT played hard even when the game was completely out of reach. Buzz has these guys playing like winners. And this Miami game., good lord was that fun to watch. I've only been here for three years but that was easily my favorite BBall game to be at.

Man... Illinois hiring Chicago's former head coach.... Don't underestimate the draw of playing for a Bears head coach in your home state college.
Lovie's name alone is going to funnel a lot of talent in that area to Illinois.
