It'd be a great hire for Texas. Just not sure that Jimbo Fisher would leave FSU after rebuilding them into a fantastic team. No one really knows but Jimbo though.
Also, by short and intermediate passing game, I was more referring to RB's outta the backfield and 10-15 yard crossing, etc routes. Should have been more specific. Not sure we'll have time against their D-Line for someone to run across the formation and come open for the 2-3 yard dump off and run after catch (never mind defenses keying more on those routes as the season went along, you're right).
Greg Boone is to Logan Thomas as Logan Thomas is to Greg Boone
I posted this on another thread regarding a UCLA defensive player, but I feel that it applies here as well:

# | Senior Writer for ESPN's RecruitingNation Jeremy Crabtree's take on VT Recruiting He's certainly right about the skill players. We'll have 8 RBs and 5 QBs next year and still don't know if any are worth starting.
I have to agree with you. We really don't know what UCLA's gameplan is, but it's entirely possible that they could be effective stopping our running game passably well by dropping into zones. That would be a nightmare.
I want Caleb or Mangus or JCC to step up and have a great first half of quarter, as it would really open up the game for us, especially if UCLA sits back and basically dares us to run the football (likely with Edmunds out IMO).
LT3 is gonna need more than 3 cheers.
Also, who the HELL schedules a bowl game for 2:00 on the 30th? Looks like I'll be DVR'ing this one or watching the replay on ESPN3.
Sandstorm? C'mon Hyundai, you're better than that.
UCLA will have scouted us and adjusted. Will they even play the run? Will they blitz every down? Will they mix in dropback zones to eliminate the under routes that you're looking for with paperboy or whatever his nickname is. Etc, etc. There is reason those under routes were not as successful as the year went on. My hope is that JC finds a gear that he was lacking this year. I think the double high ankle sprain thing was holding him back. Hopefully he will be fully healed and ready to go. Would be nice to make them play our running game, IV, etc straight up. Personally I think they do alot of dropback zone and if JC is effective, I think they blitz more. Either way its gonna be a real nightmare. Hopefully our speedsters can open the field up with some 20-40 yard pass plays or this could be a nasty looking offensive performance. Lots of LT3 down the throat with Mangus, JC wide option threats. Unfortunately threats they won't take that seriously unless we can show they deserve respect.
If you're running games sucks it opens up huge options for teams to play you tight in other places.
Three cheers for LT3. Three cheers for any fan smart enough to understand what he is up against here.
This game may be on LT3, but its only because Newsome and the prior band of part time coaches didn't feel they needed to work very hard.

# | Bitter blog - Coleman to get more carries, updates on Fuller/Exum and more notes With Trey Edmunds out for the next few months with a broken leg, J.C. Coleman will be Virginia Techs starting running back in the Sun Bowl against El Paso. After that, everythings kind of up in the air.
Isn't Tech playing UCLA?
This. Fairly similar to how I became a Hokie. I went on a road trip with my dad to look at Duke, UNC, and UVA (UVA being my favorite of the 3 to be honest. No strong tie to it, grew up in Philadelphia, just one of those schools I liked as Virginia as a whole was a state I was fond of since childhood trips to Williamsburg, etc.
We looked at Duke first (the tour guide was such a prick I knew that was wrong immediately), then UNC, which I really quite liked actually. My dad had played college baseball, and knew about western VA a bit, so he suggested we took a look at VT. They wernt even on the radar. I took a group tour from Burress, got in the car and looked at my dad and said "Dad, I think this is where I want to go to school"
We then went to UVA on the drive back north to PA. We stopped and toured and I just did not like it at all.
What a great thread. Congrats to Pierson for joining the TKP team; I look forward to your future contributions!
I don't have a grand story of how I became a Hokie, but I'll share my experience anyway. My sister went to VT before I did, and I toured colleges with her when she was making her choice. We did the usual circuit of Virginia schools, including the likes of JMU and UVA. I was about 13 or so at the time and had barely thought of college, but when we visited UVA, I was struck at just how arrogant they were. Seriously. The tour guide spent more time trying to bash VT than sell his own school. I wasn't off my rocker, either, because my whole family got that impression. It left us all thinking, "Why do they spend so much time and effort knocking another school? Maybe VT really has something going for them." My sister settled on VT for computer science, and the UVA trip experience wasn't really the deciding factor, but it left an impression on me. I didn't even apply to UVA when the time came.
My HS guidance counselor knew I was interested in science and told me that JMU was the place to be, with new facilities and whatnot. I applied and got in, but I waited to hear back from VT. I had visited my sister during her time there and had watched most of the games on TV, so I had a pretty good feel for the community, geography, and feel of the place. The only thing that stuck out about JMU was that I would have to cross I-81 to get to class on a bridge that actually wobbled.
I got my VT acceptance and never looked back.
My son's school issues fujitsu windows tablets to all the students. They are incredibly good paperweights. As a useful device....not so much.
As an avid Hokie and Auburn Tiger, I can tell you the Verne Lundquist is one of the worst announcers and CBS is horrible to watch a game on. regular game is 3 1/2 or so hours? Nah, let's throw and extra hour of commercials and breaks in there.
CBS is milking what's left of their CFB contract with commercials IMO.

You can buy a plastic replica on Ebay that only weighs 4 lbs. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Virginia-Tech-Hokie-Tunnel-Stone-/271019959877
Too late for Christmas unfortunately, but you may be able to get it before the bowl game.
^What Philly said. I was actually talking with my brother recently about something along the same lines. He made a comment about not being able to call himself a Hokie since he didn't go to Tech. Truth of the matter is, I'm a Hokie because of him. It all happened during the '06 GT game iirc. We were watching the game and my little brother in 8th grade is going on and on about how he wants to go to VT and here I am a sophomore in high school and haven't given it a thought. Since that game and with all the gushing my bro was doing, I was convinced I wanted to attend VT. Fast forward to today, here I am a VT grad and my brother never had the grades to go to a 4 year institution. But the Hokies were the first sports team he was ever a true fan of, he indirectly convinced me to love VT, and he has been to Blacksburg/Lane multiple times and loves it there as much as I do. Damn straight he can call himself a Hokie just as much as you or I can.
A lady I worked with at one point was from Lititz, and she brought me back some Wilburbuds when she went home for a visit, because she knew I am a chocoholic. I made sure I visited Lititz when my wife and I made a trip to central PA a year later.
Remember when TEs were a weakness at the beginning of the year especially with Malleck getting hurt? Now they are looking like the strength of the offense and maybe the team. Cline-Malleck-Hodges and possibly Burke? That's a scary combination for opposing defenses.
Me as well. I took a tour of the "grounds" when applying for colleges (had absolutely no ties to either wahooland or VT except as the in-state schools everyone applied to) and I was accepted to both. On the car ride home with father-dearest, he asked me what I thought. All I could say was, I couldn't see myself there. I really just don't get the allure. The whole campus (especially the students) seems like its trying so hard to be something its not (Princeton, Harvard etc..) Needless to say, that was that... Boom! Hokie!
Do you think he understands there isn't a 140 character limit on actual ink n paper notes?
Totally agree.
The real problem is that there are only 2 games not on ESPN. Wouldn't you rather Jan 1 be full of games on every channel? Wouldn't it be nice to not have to watch the Potato Bowl because thats the only game ESPN has that night?
ESPN is the best and worst thing to ever happen to college football.
Finally a game that won't need to be streamed through my Xbox. No complaints here.
I tried to talk my wife into this in our house. But the idea of trying to hang a piece of stone above a doorway and slapping it each day seemed like I was going to write my own Hokie Themed Obituary.
"Dedicated Tech Fan died yesterday after Hokie Stone impaling..."

Speaking of rumblings, people are saying that JMU might hold a presser on Friday announcing Stiney as their HC. Anybody else hearing this rumor?
