Just out of curiosity, I looked at the Rivals rankings of our QBs from 2002 - 2013. This list includes guys that were recruited as QBs and/or played QB at some point in their careers at Tech:
2002 Marcus Vick (5 star QB)
2003 Jon Fulton (2 star QB)
2003 Cory Holt (3 star QB)
2004 Sean Glennon (4 star QB)
2004 Cory Holt (3 star QB) from Hargrave
2005 Greg Boone (3 star ATH)
2005 Ike Whitaker (4 star QB)
2006 Kam Chancellor (3 star QB)
2007 Tyrod Taylor (5 star QB)
2008 Ju-Ju Clayton (2 star ATH)
2008 Marcus Davis (3 star ATH)
2009 Logan Thomas (4 star TE)
2010 Mark Leal (3 star QB)
2010 Ricardo Young (3 star QB)
2012 Brenden Motley (3 star ATH)
2013 Bucky Hodges (4 star QB)
2013 Carlis Parker (3 star ATH)
I'd say the biggest disappointment was Ike Whitaker (4 star QB). There were a lot of players who changed position changes on that list; it's interesting that Rivals listed Kam Chancellor as a QB back in 2006.
Naw we don't need it, we just have Sam Rogers intimidate the dirt out of our house
There are also grumblings that London has played the race card against Frank in recruiting. So you can add that to your musings on the T-breds/757 as well. But I would think what really hurts Frank in recruiting is his age. He's got guys in place now who can overcome that. The next step is to win some of these high profile games with the recruits we have been pulling in.
Why in the world would someone pick LOLUVA? It really baffles me the level of recruits they get.
Totally agree about Bobby Petrino....lots of picturesque mountain roads near the burg..pefect for a motorcycle ride when the leaves are changing...would even make a good date
This would be huge in controlling the scrambling ability of Hundley. Would like to see him one more time in a VT jersey.
My hope is he isn't pushing himself too hard. He has a good future as an NFLer and I'm sure any other field he decides to persue.
Or in uVa's case, zima-ed and dined.
I get chills just thinking about the plays against GT w/ KyFuller crowdin the line. I can just imagine him going up against Hundley.
It's been years since I had Wilburbuds, but I miss them so!
My memory is that Bud has a terrible record against PAC-12 offenses. Like really bad. But it's a small sample size - only Stanford and Cal.
I think Deon Newsome was from Hampton, but he obviously had a strong VT connection
Man I sure hope he can go. Our D is even greater with him on the field.
Up vote for throwing out a strong opinion.
But in my opinion, the issue with the Thoroughbreds is more than that. I believe VT sees this group as the AAU'ing of football recruiting, and I think our old guard (read: Cavanaugh) hated this notion with a passion and tried to curtail their influence. This just strengthened their resolve against VT. Now, I believe, we've made some in roads with a lot of this crowd due, in part, to having Cornell Brown in the area.
I agree that we have given our recruiters a pass for too long and accuse everyone else of cheating. VT cheats. We know they do, there are too many rules to be broken to be a clean program anymore. I bet Michigan State doesn't think highly of us right now.
And part of that is the new coaches. We're more aggressive than ever before, we will see if it changes anything. If nothing else, I like our evaluation process for OL and QB's a lot better now that we have actual professionals handling it.
Also had class with Marcus Vick. Incredible prick.
I agree 100% with that. Far too much emphasis is put on star ratings for recruits. It's not really a true indicator for how a recruit will pan out.
The part I found ironic was where VT_Slacker used the word "lazy" three times. Kidding kidding...
"Beat that...."
Thats what she said...
I'm really excited to see what our defense can do against UCLA, there's not really anybody in Bud's league out here in the PAC-12. What I'm afraid of most is that our offense simply won't be able to keep the UCLA's offense off the field which is going to be especially dangerous considering UCLA never huddles.
Maybe... I read the second sentence as ironic. If so, I apologize. There's more to recruiting than stars though. If a kid is a 5 star player it's a good indication he's a stud, sure. However a 2 star rating doesn't automatically relegate him to jobber status. I really doubt our staff values star rankings over their gut and whatever tape they have on the kid.
Just out of curiosity, is it a confidence or straight pick group?
Torrian Gray said Kyle Fuller surprised him w/how well he moved around Saturday. Thinks if he feels good, he'll play vs. UCLA. #Hokies— Andy Bitter (@AndyBitterVT) December 18, 2013
History lesson: Fifth Third Bank is the result from the merger of two banks back in the early 1900's. Guess what their names were?
He/she didn't say our class sucked. I think he/she was saying this is one of our better classes but still that VT just hasn't historically been very proficient at recruiting. I'd like to think we're turning that around though, and this class is just a start of things to come. I'm excited for Hokie Nation!
Sorry, but these are the best chips to come out of Pennsylvania.

Yeah, we should have sat Tyrod and played Boone. That would've made sense.

His name is pronounced "Sob-Check", and nobody is going to be disappointed in this young man. He is the real deal and he did beat Moss like a drum all game long!
