He's still my mom's favorite Hokie...
That's a dumb rule. These guys are moving so fast, how are you supposed to change your strike zone when the receiver decides to go down while you're on your way in for the hit? That's where half these penalties come from, they're moving too fast to expect them to change their strike zone.
I can't edit the post, so here is some additional documentation (and ignore that grammar...clearly I have been in the office for too long):
2013 Rules Changes Provisional
NCAA Football 2011 AND 2012 RULES AND INTERPRETATIONS
First off, like many of you, I thought that players could only wear the same number if they played on the opposite side of the ball. However, if you look at Rule 1-4-2, there is actually no mention of it:
Players’ Numbering
ARTICLE 2. a. All players shall be numbered 1 through 99. Any number preceded by zero (“0’’) is illegal.
b. No two players of the same team shall participate in the same down wearing identical numbers.
c. Markings in the vicinity of the numbers are not permitted.
PENALTY [a-c]—Live-ball foul. Five yards from the previous spot
d. Numbers shall not be changed during the game to deceive opponents [S27]
All this says is that they cannot be on the field at the same time . I am guessing the "opposite side of the ball" thing is to help prevent this (Not that it stopped ND). I also blame the talking heads at ESPN for feeding this to me.
Secondly, targeting comes with an automatic ejection. Maybe it's me, but half of the time I see a targeting penalty, I completely disagree with it. It made me think of BillDozerVT's Power Hour video and all of the big hits in there. I wonder how many of those would have resulted in a penalty/ejection.
3 seconds as a minimum amount of time to spike the ball? What's the point of having the clock at all, then?
Finally, the rule having to announce that you are changing uniform numbers mid-game? That's because Lane Kiffin is still a big douche.
It's my first year of intramural basketball. We lost one game by 45, the next by 34, we got into a fight in the 3rd game, possibly the funniest thing I've ever witnessed (lost too), and then lost to a team on a buzzer beater last night. At least I scored over half the teams points for three of the games haha. So, congrats on the win!!! Great post Brian.
Side note I know Vermont isn't a football state compared to other but good lord that competition is brutal. A good laugh is at that 41 second mark on the attempted blind side block on his interception return. Either way welcome to Hokie Nation
The Redskins Offense this year was all built off of run fakes. Yes, not typical pro set playaction but it effectively got receivers in matchups that resulted in wide open throws for RG3. Basically, a good run fake results in a wide open throw, so yes I think its possible.
Your points are well taken - I wasn't thinking in terms of the kind of routes that work best with a run-first/play-action mentality, and that they are by their nature lower percentage routes. I only meant to argue that I thought 'run first mentality' is more likely to impact overall production (yards and TD's per game or season), than completion percentage.
In any case, despite how logical your argument is, let's both hope you're wrong! An extremely efficient passing game would be an indicator of a very good season for us, I have to imagine (assuming normal constants of strong run production, defense and *wistful sigh* special teams hold true).

it only took me 234234 clicks to find this url.
If you look up Nick Acree on Hokiesports, his profile shows him breaking the bench press record on the right hand side.
Very good point, and may I add that Cincy was by far his worst game of the season. To speculate, Foster knew he was hurt, and that's why he came out fired up when he talked to the media and delivered his "played his nuts off" speech in defense of Exum.
AWESOME!
Would love to see our DL re-create that on a weekly basis this fall.
RE: your basketball skills-you're only the losingest because I didn't play IM b-ball. I could foul out with the best of 'em.
Interesting he said he previously hurt it against Cincinnati, at Fedex Field. The same Fedex that tore a couple more players ACL's......
Both of his parents are doctors, so I doubt he would have trouble paying for the expenses if needed, too.
He's still on scholarship, and it benefits VT a whole heck of a lot more to get him adequate medical treatment than to let him just fend for himself and hope for the best. A few grand here won't seem like much if Exum picks off Boyd to seal a win in the ACCCG and head to the BCS. Just sayin.
No wonder why Atlanta is the city where the playas play...
Are these on BeamerBall?
....if VT pays for his surgery, trips back to Pensacola, mom's trips, incidentals, etc.
And does it matter that he hurt it not playing football for VT.
Wish I could, but have other plans.
Encouraging read.
I seem to remember a huge number of the players on the '05 squad, eventually getting a shot in the pros.
Because historically that's not how run-first play action offenses work.
Could you devise a scheme where a team runs a lot, and uses play action for short to medium safe passes? Yes. But it wouldn't be successful. The point of the play action is to open up the vertical passing routes, which has lower completion rates.
Is it possible that Beamer will have a seventy+ percent completion rate team? Sure. Do I think that day will ever come? No.
All the motioning and ball faking was a cluster all season. I remember the second series in the bowl game Demitri Knowles (I think it was him) lined up on the wrong side of the formation, Thomas notices' it and is yelling at him to get over to the right side and as Knowles is switching sides he opens his arms for a ball fake as he crosses in front of Logan. Logan just stares at him for a couple seconds and shakes his head as he was lining up. It was the perfect microcosm of our offense.
MIT went 5-4 last year. Fist season with 5 wins since 2008 and first winning record since 1999.
I noticed that a lot last year. DBs didn't even think twice about biting because it was so sloppy and expected.
The TD pass to Knowles was probably one of his better ones and the DB still caught up to tackle/interfere with Knowles, who is supposed to be the speedster of the group.

sounds like we have some things in common then ;)
