From my meek position on a couch every Saturday, my guess is that the level of competition from HS to College for a kicker is quite vast, so giving out a scholarship to a kicker right out of high school is a pretty big risk. The idea is to bring in a group of kickers and have them compete against each other for the job.

That said, we do have Michael Santamaria committed for next year. Whether or not he has a scholarship or is a preferred walk-on is still up in the air.

Oh contraire!!...I would LOVE to see Leal play...if it means we're blowing people out. If LT plays the first half of the rest of our games and Leal plays the second half of the rest of our games I'm absolutely ecstatic!

But, realistically, I don't think anybody on here see's that happening. Thomas will start and finish (barring injury) the rest of our games this season (whether it's 5 games or 6)

I agree with your point that if he struggles with his ego for being benched after tossing 3 picks he's not ready for the league. Do you think, just maybe a little selfishly, the coaches are afraid of damaging his ego for the sake of VT and not so much for the sake of LT's hopes in the league?

Bottom line....if LT is healthy he will be playing. Unless of course we are kicking someone's ass, then Leal will
see some playing time. No offense to Leal but I don't want him to play. I want LT to finish out his senior
year which he came back to do.

This is what Andy Bitter Reported Scott Loeffler saying, regarding the redzone struggles, in an article titled "Foster says Hopkins deserves more pub; Loeffler thinks run game struggles showing up in red zone"

The run game problems are a big reason for the red zone struggles.

When Loeffler was at Michigan, he said he did a study when the Wolverines were struggling to run the ball and finish off drives in the red zone. He said he found that when the team threw an incompletion on first down in the red zone, the percentage of times it scored a touchdown dropped to 22 percent.

Its ridiculous, he said. If youre going to throw it, youve got to complete it. The moral of the story is: if youre a great throwing team, youre 60 percent. So that means theres a 40 percent chance theres an incompletion, which moves that thing all the way down to 20 percent that youre going to score in the red. So you better be able to run the ball.

Loeffler said Tech has done an OK job of throwing the ball in the end zone, but its not easy, especially when coverages get scrunched into a small space.

Calling a third down and eight on [the] 8-yard line is not easy, he said. Thats a hard call. Thats what the NFL works on all the time. So weve got to be able to run it better down there. Itll all get better if we can just run it a little better.

For those who would like to know what the coaches are thinking.

Unfortunately I think there is an implied deal attached to Thomas' return that his position as starter and team leader should never be in question. It probably wouldn't make too much sense to "sacrifice" ur draft opportunity and return to school only to get benched.

Where I have an issue with this arrangement is in games like duke where its just not clicking, some relief should be worth considering; at least somewhere between picks 3 and 4. I like LT but I think he has proven over the years that when he's off, boy is he off. And if it challenges his ego that much to get benched after throwing 3 picks then he is clearly not ready for the league after all.

I think we actually wore all white..I seem to remember jmu being in purple

Well, the Hokies seemed to get to the 30 numerous times, but I only recall them penetrating the 20 twice, scoring once. On first and goal, Edmunds came out and Coleman came in. He had a terrific gain on a counter to the inverted veer on first down. On second down, the Hokies brought in Hopkins at fullback, and went unbalanced right with McLaughlin lining up on the right side. McLaughlin and and Cline had terrific initial steps, but Cline gave a little ground and McLaughlin's leg was in the hole. Caleb Farris pulled to lead through the hole, and seemed to get tangled up in McLaughlin and Cline, and got pushed back, while Hopkins effectively kicked out the end.

Enter Coleman. He ran into the hole, but instead of either looking to bounce or changing pace, he steam rolled right into the pile. Physics took cover, and things didn't move forward. Coles jumps offsides, Thomas throws a pick, and the rest is history. On those three plays, you had two execution breakdowns (Coles and Thomas) and then personnel utilization issues, as the Hokies depended on two freshmen to execute the most critical blocks on the play (again, initially both looked terrific, but they were outmuscled after initial push), and you have your smallest running back in on a power play.

I wonder which jersey we had on against JMU...

I would rather have a bigger, stronger, and faster guy who is comfortable in Bud's system. Classic example was Jonathan Allen. He was the perfect Bud Foster defensive end, but he chose to go to Alabama where he is an odd fit for their 3-4 defense.

As far as Virginia recruits, Hand was the biggest loss because other than Ekanem the Hokies really don't have that James Gayle big body stud end to stop the run. Brown is so good, he could be great, but if he didn't buy into the gap fit concept, he would open as many holes as he created.

Holmes would have been a tight end at VT. Moss would have been perfect in the old Ricky Bustle OL group, but I don't know if he had the feet to be great in this system. I have not seen enough of Henderson, Kamara, and Martini to have an opinion. Stewart intrigued me. He is very quick and smooth and I think he would have been a good fit in the Loeffler offense, but I don't know if the Hokies were ever a contender for him.

I just wanna see that effort like Rogers promises and better execution. Maybe some smarter plays from LT too. He showed glimpses when throwing the ball down at the feet of covered receivers when he was being hit.

As far as I know, it's new. I'll ask my buddy who played from 08-11 if they ever did this when he was there.

I have said frequently that Trey Edmunds will be a very good running back, but that he would have made for an all-world backer. I think if you asked that Duke defensive back that made the final interception Saturday if Trey Edmunds would make a great linebacker, I bet he would say yes.

That being said, the linebacker ship has sailed. The Hokies have devoted two years to making Trey Edmunds their top running back. He is outstanding picking up blitzes. You can see his quickness and strength as a running back. He seems to have regressed in his natural running back instincts (which was the aspect of his game that impressed me so much in the 2012 scrimmages. In the Duke game, he was very fluid and aggressive, but their were a couple of runs where he had holes but wasn't patient enough and ended up cutting inside a bit too early.

Still, of the backs currently on the roster, Trey is the best right now.

I kinda wanna know if the guy wearing the bunny suit actually managed to hit/catch anything...

I get so damn discouraged when I read things like that. I even feel somewhat sorry for Coach Foster. I think of the powerhouse teams we could have had over the last 15 years or so, if we even had a top 25 offense. I read a stat somewhere last week,(cant remember where) but for the overwhelming majority of the last 15 years our offensive production has ranked consistently in the bottom 50% of all teams. THAT IS PATHETIC!!! While i do understand and know Beamers coaching philosophy and beliefs on what it takes to win games...........WHY CAN THEY NOT PUT SOME EFFORT INTO OUR OFFENSE??? I get sick and tired of hearing how we have a top 2 defense and a bottom 2 offense. You cant really argue with that!! .......jus' sayin'!!!!!

to each his own. I personally did NOT like the orange for various reasons, the least of which being that we lost to Duke. I DID really really like our Black Unis that we wore against Boise State...we Lost that game too :( I don't know if we realistically would have seen the all black or all orange unis again had those two games ended differently.

Supposedly Beamer is telling Wise that he can win the job next year. If that is the case, my question is really if you believe you have a starting FG kicker, isn't that worth as much as a guy you think can be a starting LB or DT?

Can't upvote this because I'm just a neophyte, but this is exactly how I feel about wearing maroon. I will henceforth dream of Hokiebird surfing atop a tidal wave crushing rock outcroppings on Gameday Eve.
