Whoa Horse! Let's not get ahead of ourselves. He first needs to get past ManBearPig and the rest of the DL to even have a chance at throwing. Watching how easily LOLUVA was pressuring and sacking him I don't see that coming easy.
I don't think that jump balls will be much of an issue though. You could say the same about Bama receivers and jump balls weren't much of an issue.
yea, I see them going after Cam Cameron or Chad Morris as said above. Just because USC has traditionally run a west coast/pro system though I'd give the nod to Cam Cameron (even though he only has had what, 5 games as OC in cfb so far?). But he is the 'hot ticket' coach right now and is flashy enough to get USCs attention
It is the same concept, but has much more bootleg action and pass pro versus all the short outs-post combos and tunnel screens. Renner is a really good QB, and they will put Eric Ebron in the slot on the field side and force Bonner to cover him 1 on 1. That is a scary matchup.
They also run more traditional screens to the running backs.
I worry about their size. I don't know how tall they are but they look real long. They'll win jump balls, even though Kyle can jump out the building and Facyson is big for a CB.
Paul and Bud always duel in these games. They're the best at making adjustments to the others' strategy and they're both very very intelligent with their systems. These guys don't just put adjustments in at halftime, it's a series-by-series or even play-by-play adjustment. By time one adjusts to the other, the first adds something else for the second to get around.
I attributed Iowa's victory over GT to their defensive line, being much bigger and much stronger than GT. People talk about having a lot of time to prepare for GT's system being key to success because it isn't a system they're used to defending. But if you can 1) Keep your gaps, 2) Defeat cut blocks, and 3) Push their o-line around, you'll be successful against this offense. Iowa definitely had time, and they could definitely push GT around. Discipline is key, so Iowa could beat them and USCw could not, even with the extra time.
Chad Morris anyone?
I really wish we could give someone else a try at returning kickoffs besides Knowles. He just looks very tentative at the job.
Excellent write-up as usual, French. Another VT player who I believe deserves special mention is true freshman offensive tackle Jonathan McLaughlin. For a good portion of the evening, he was matched up one-on-one against GT's best defensive lineman, Jerimiah Attachou, and he did a great job on him. I only think I heard Attachou's name called once or twice all night long. If he stays healthy and keeps working hard, this kid has a very bright future.
Industrial Engineering degree FTW! Finally used it for something!
About Bernard..I was thinking that as well. I think they really miss him because it did not look like they could run it very well.
I usually add the underline manually. Joe had mentioned at one point that he might update the hyperlink style to stand out a little more.
What a coincidence. Right at 8:30 I was CLEANING OFF A SOAKING WET CAT THAT HAD BEEN BLASTED BY A SKUNK. fml
Al Golden, Kirby Smart, Sarkesian, Kevin Sumlin.
After watching Fuller2 - Facyson for a few games, I'm not afraid of any receivers. A pass is an opportunity to halt a drive and give the ball to Thomas-Loeffler.
A buddy asked me if UNC was that bad as they were losing to UNC - I didn't get that game up here. I haven't seen a UNC game all year, I don't think, maybe pieces of the GT/UNC game. UNC was supposed to be a dark horse this year, but with the matriculation of Bernard it was going to be a rough go. Let's hope UNC doesn't put up much of a fight next weekend.
This game was local for me up here in PA. It was a beautiful thing. I think at the end of the 1st quarter UVA had zero passing yards. But their defense held their own, sacking Savage a bunch of times. Those Pitt receivers look really good though.
I was too small to play football. I played soccer before it was popular and lacrosse because my mom didn't know what it was and she didn't know I was too small for that too. Fell in love with rugby in college. Never really new or cared about American football.
Returned to VA in the early 90s. Can't watch too much rugby on TV in VA. By the late 90's I needed a sport to use as a tool to relax. Being a rugby fan, I'm partial to amateur sports. I selected college football.
Cast about to find a team and my wife's classmate was a practice team fullback from VT. He helped me learn a few things so I could understand a bit.
I became a fan of VT in particular because of the lunchbox. It fully aligns with my outlook on life and work.
Moved to Roanoke a few years later and just before the first season I was here, a guy approached me in the parking lot of a grocery store and tried to buy my pickup truck because the Dodge Maroon is so close to the VT maroon. Gotta love that fan base.
Have season tickets now, my young daughters attend with their cheerleader uniforms and wear their Hokie Bird hats when it's cold.
I just now saw the score of that game. I question the strategy of firing him now. He clearly is not the coach they need, but getting one more recruiting class out of him would have been a good idea. Now, who knows which direction they go in. HokiesFTW mentioned Sarkisian, which is a good call, but I don't think Sark will bail on a Washington team that he appears to be coaching up pretty well, especially with the talent he currently has.
They need someone to revive that program, but let's not get ahead of ourselves thinking that the next coach will bring back the glory days of Pete Carroll. That guy was a special coach and there are few guys out there in the world that could do replicate that.
Cam Cameron, anyone?
Ever seen a Pitt game? They joke up here that anyone who commits to Pitt must love yellow because the seats at the stadium are yellow and there are always plenty to be had.
Forgot to check the recruits lists, and managed to miss Dooley. Turkey leg for you for correcting me and giving us correct info.
So 3 fringe teams lost: Wisconsin, ND and Ole Miss. OK State is gonna be on the fringe of being ranked if they still are. Then from the "others receiving votes" I think NIU is guaranteed to be ranked after what they did to Purdue. GT, UCF, and Arizona all lost. That probably leads to either Nebraska and ASU being ranked. The fourth team to be ranked would probably be us. So it'll come down to whether or not that loss to WVU is enough to knock out Okie State (I don't think it was).
Steve Sarkisian maybe?
Great stories here, but am I really this old?
My story is both similar and different from many here, but mostly it is one of a highly imperfect kid who became a Tech student, then a man, and still has great love for the Hokies, Virginia Tech, and the whole community, local and far, who supports the teams and school.
As a kid I was pretty much left to my own devices to roam around town and do what I wanted. The only grounding I had was sports, especially football. My first Hokie game live or otherwise was a barn-burning 3-0 victory over Villanova as my little league team traveled the thirty or forty minutes it took then to traverse the mountain to see Jerry Claiborne's three yards and a cloud of dust offense. I can't really recall, but I think I missed Tech's only score, but it was enough and the Gobblers got the win. Entering the gate at Lane Stadium that day though was like passing through the Looking Glass into a magical kingdom for this ten-year old. Concrete pillars pushed a cascaded stadium underside high into the sky. I never had imagined that a structure could hold so much open space. Large, orange and maroon streamers and flags were carried aloft horizontally by the mid-Autumn Blacksburg winds. And strange baritone/bass sounds emanated from outside the concourse in the direction of the field. I learned shortly that they came from those long plastic horns that concessionaires sold. Even the bathrooms held more urinals than could possibly be needed. I did not know which one to choose. It was wonderful as we kids headed off to explore it all amidst and against the human throng buying souvenirs and food and pouring itself into and around the stadium.
Where did I sit? A vague memory tells me my group had bleacher seats which we never used as we found ourselves in that northwest corner of the stadium no one ever seemed to use. Out on the field that day were two players, one named Loria and the other Beamer. One became an All-American while the other became a coach. As for me, I left that day with a Virginia Tech banner and the first of many exciting Lane Stadium days, a small few down on the field but most in that northwest corner or the student section on the East side. Call us the Gobblers, Hokies, Hoakies (yes, I was there then too), VPI, Tech, or something else, I don't care. We are Virginia Tech.
Boom.

Really? Yes yes yes! I hate him because of Tennessee. I remember him not even looking at Beamer when he shook his hand after the game. And then the death threats when he left Knoxville....
