Week 1* Other Games Thread
Big time football is back!
Because we're all Sunday morning quarterbacks.
Big time football is back!
Much as been said in the leading up to this year about how vital keeping Braxton Burmeister healthy is to this season for the Hokies. But which team would fare better if their starter went down for 3 games? [Please note this is NOT a injury wish on any player on any team] UNC, as of an internet search from a few minutes ago (02SEP21 1730), has yet to name their backup. While Sam Howell is clearly their number one and Braxton Burmeister ours, who is ready to step into number one's shoes mid game? UNC backups are a sophomore (with 16 yards passing) and a freshman, both who were highly rated but basically babes-in-the-woods.
For anyone interested, Mike and Dwight Vick have started a podcast where they are discussing college football and VT in particular. I haven't finished the first episode yet, just premiered today. Should be interesting to hear perspective of Hokie football from two former players
Talking lot about his days at Lane, plus some UNC analysis.
If you check out his roster page on Hokie Sports, C.J. McCray is now listed as a DL - not an LB. I would imagine the emergence of Jaden Keller as a strong true freshman and the incredibly thin DE depth spurred this decision.
As far as I'm aware, the roster does not distinguish between DT and DE, so I'm assuming this is another Barno-esque experiment.

Duuuval will be rockin' No. 25 this Friday π pic.twitter.com/12DC93uedZβ Virginia Tech Football (@HokiesFB) September 1, 2021
Let's get the 25's rolling! Hopefully Chamarri can step up in coverage and continue to lay the hammer when needed.
Edit: We will keep the tradition alive. 25 likes for each comment!

As leaked by Tae Daley, the combo seems to be orange unis, orange pants, and white helmets with a maroon "VT" for Friday's opener against UNC. Considering it's orange effect, it's a sharp look in my opinion - 7/10. Still would like to get those 2017 unis we wore against UNC back though.
Virginia Tech has released its Week 1 depth chart. Some quick observations to follow. Most notable listing? Freshman Kaden Moore as the starting RG and Silas Dzansi as the starting RT. Johnny Jordan as backup C, though I'd expect him some at RG too. #Hokies pic.twitter.com/tCgAcqyztOβ Andy Bitter (@AndyBitterVT) August 30, 2021
As it should be, but just got the email confirming that it is officially sold out.
Really need a rocking crowd to add that home field advantage to what is going to be a tough test for the Hokies!
I will be in section 2 yelling, who else is planning to be there?
Let's Go!
The college football season is here. Time for some bold predictions. The more specific the better. I'll start:
Tayvion Robinson goes for 1000 yards receiving.
A DB other than Jermaine Waller leads the ACC in INTs
We beat UNC with special teams play.
What have you got?
CFB is back!!!!!!! Not a great slate but some intriguing matchups today, starting with Nebraska - Illinois. It will be interesting to see Bert back in the B1G.
Mack Brown spends his Fridays cutting his pension checks in half with scissors, cause he doesn't need that much money. After his 3rd nap of the day, he goes to the bank, drops them off with the teller, and walks away. Thinking he's an old senile man, the teller chuckles, until she realizes the checks are cut long ways. She can't put them in the reader, and can't figure out which check number on the top part matches with the check value on the bottom part.

James Mitchell, Dax Hollifield, Chamarri Conner, Brock Hoffman, and Tyrell Smith
As Tech's staff gets bigger, coach Justin Fuente said he expects more movement like this, just nature of the business, Joseph had been with the Hokies athletic department since 2017, she was previously volleyball program's director of operationsβ michaelniziolek (@michaelniziolek) August 26, 2021
Another support staff blow.
Laaser talked with Ham and Corn for a bit then Brock Hoffman was on for the 2nd half or so. Sorry for the rough notes, I took them while workings and listening but here were some of the talking points:
Corn and Ham both happy with progress since last podcast. Saw the development and improvements they wanted to see.
Names mentioned: Kaden Moore OL- for a young guy, he isn't having busts, even with the 1s. Still has work with technique sometimes but has been consistent.
Jaden Keller LB - Athletic ability to be a superstar. Hard worker, high football IQ for a freshman
My main takeaway, the new workout room looks legit and Coach Fuente really likes steak.
Not too much new insight but does build up the hype.
Also not for nothing, but if you're gonna do a TV spot on Zoom, put your damn laptop/tablet/phone on a steady surface. Enough with the wobble!

Comments at today's press availability gave some clarity on the linebackers....
Tisdale-Hollifield
McCray-McCray
Artis-Ferguson
Keller
With the lack of DL depth and the effusive praise for the linebackers, perhaps we see some junk lineups (extra linebackers with fewer DL) like some of the VT opponents rolled out at times due to COVID last year.
Virginia Tech Director of Recruiting Beau Davidson is expected to resign and take a position at Texas Tech, per source. Davidson had been a member of the recruiting staff at Virginia Tech since 2018.β Mike McDaniel (@MikeMcDanielSOS) August 24, 2021
Another blow to the off the field staff who already lost three others in the last 12 months.
