UNC & WF Schedule "Non-Conference" Game Against Each Other

And it is an incredible idea!

In case you haven't heard, UNC and WF just announced a home-and-home "non-conference" matchup against each other in 2019 and 2021. You might be asking yourself how two conference opponents can schedule each other as a non-conference game. Well, as long as they aren't on the conference schedule, they can schedule each other and count it as non-conference because it won't count against their conference record and standings. If the ACC won't move to a 9-game conference schedule, this needs to happen more to create those matchups the fans want. Let's schedule FSU, Clemson, and Louisville and see them more often than once every 6 years.

WR Coaching search

By now we all have heard/read ODU's Zohn Burden has had two interviews with VT. But it's said we are interviewing several others. Has anyone heard any other names? I would love to get Zohn because of his youth. TKP family what else are we hearing/reading on the subject.

Embrace the wild turkey on uniforms?

I like our current uni's. But, I was just thinking.....I think Oregon does an awesome job of incorporating 'duck things' into their unis. (except their silly looking cartoon duck which I think sucks horribly - it's wearing a f***ing scarf for god's sake)

The turkey really is one of the most beautiful birds on the continent and I think it would be awesome if VT sought out some subtle (or not so subtle) designs that mimicked it's natural appearance. There are a tremendous amount of patterns and shapes to choose from. I wish I had a graphic design software installed on my comp so I could mock something up. (what?! Microsoft Paint isn't one of the best? Does anyone have any recommendations for free software while I'm at it?)

Zohn Burden Recruits

Zohn Burden's name has came out as the first candidate to publicly interview for our vacant WR coach spot. He has been ranked as the #1 recruiter for C-USA in the 2015 recruiting cycle. We are currently looking for players to flip and finish out this cycle on a high note. So I went into his profile on 247 and looked at players he was the main recruiter for. I am going to leave the list of his recruits and please for the sake of conversation tell me if you would take any of them. I know that there are different academic standards for ODU and VT but just for conversation act as if they could get in.

A Formula for Victory?

Throughout my years as a fan of Hokie football, one common theory I've heard is that we should run the ball more; that rushing equals wins. I decided to see if the numbers back that theory up., looking at play calls through three quarters a game, for the last four years.

Why did I choose those parameters? It is well established that given a fourth quarter lead, CFB goes conservative and tries to kill the clock. Conversely, given a deficit, we throw more. Finally, four years gives us two years of Lefty, and two of the previous regime.

The Numbers:
Run>Pass: 19-12 (.613)
Pass>Run: 12-7 (.632)
Balance: 2-1 (.667)

Laurence Gibson invited to NFL combine, but almost missed deadline.

Thanks to Andy Bitter for pointing this out.

"College nearly kept Virginia Tech and former Buena standout football player Laurence Gibson from being able to become a professional offensive lineman."

All due to email.

Check-in numbers for Early Enrollees

Per www.beamerball.com/free/news.htm it doesn't seem like there was all that much height/weight inflation for these guys.. they're coming in all pretty close to advertised sizes on the recruiting sites, and bigger in some cases. Mook needs to add some weight ASAP though.

Austin Clark 6-6 293
Yosuah Nijman 6-7 277
Tyrell Smith 6-3.5 276
Xavier Burke 6-3 265
Carson Lydon 6-2 243
Adonis Alexander 6-3 192
Mook Reynolds 6-0 168

Frank Beamer comments on Wide Receiver Coach Search

Frank Beamer conducted a short interview on Beamerball.com where he discussed the search for replacing Aaron Moorehead. In the interview, he discusses Moorehead's tenure at Virginia Tech and his reasons for leaving. He also highlighted the first team meeting of the 2015 season and briefly discussed the seven early enrollees. You can read the interview at http://www.beamerball.com/free/news.htm

Most significantly, Beamer discussed the coaching search for Moorehead's replacement.

NFC/AFC Champ Game Thread

Since nobody has posted this up yet I decided to. Saw the amazing come back by Seattle against GB while NE is exposing Indy's porous D. I gotta be honest, other than Seattle, I'm disappointed in the teams that are playing for the conference champs mainly because of the QBs involved. GB: I dislike Rogers because of the Insight bowl back in '03 (no it was NOT an honor for our D to get exposed like that and don't tell me to get over it). Indy: I dislike that Luck is doing almost as well (if not better) than Manning, and the Orange Bowl in '11.

Candidates to replace Moorehead??

I'm wondering if we have anyone already in the works. I'd like to see someone with ties to D-1 football in terms of coaching experience even if it is a Grad assistant. I definitely don't want to go the route of D-1 AA coaching just because they are on the cheap. David Terrell exhausted his 2 years as a GA and was assisting Moorehead so perhaps thats an option. But just the drive that Moorehead had and NFL experience is hard to beat. Hope we get a good one.

Us vs. Them Recruiting The 757

There's been a lot of talk on here about VT losing/or rebuilding the connection to the 757. So I though I'd look at the results from Rivals 2008 - 2015

Of 3, 4, and 5 star recruits (102 players)

  • Virginia Tech 30%
  • Virginia 29%
  • Old Dominion 4%
  • Maryland 4%
  • WVU 3%
  • FSU 3%
  • Tennessee 2%

21 other schools (14 P5 teams) signed the remaining 25 players

There have been 5 5* players
3 choose UVA
1 VT
1 FSU

  • Bama got Blake Sims as their one player from 757
  • Clemson got Tajh Boyd as their one player from 757

I still don't know what it means or who's winning.

Tyrod's impending free agency, where does he wind up?

I was going through a list of impending NFL free agents and looking at who was going to get resigned, tagged, etc. and saw Tyrod's name pop up for the Ravens and started thinking about where he might wind up. Does leave for a situation where he at least has the chance to compete for a starting gig, does he resign with the Ravens and continue to backup Flacco?
