The Hokies play VMI today at 4PM in Cassell Coliseum. The game will be on the ACCN. VMI is 5-7; but have won their last two games.
VMI is a young team that is not very tall. Hokies should match up well.
Stats for the stat nerds:
I don't see anything significant in the stats. VMI is a good shooting team shooting 44% overall and 37% from 3; but I don't think they have played many teams as good as the Hokies.
Lt. Peterson, are you ever coming back? I miss your analysis.
The Ladies play Wichita State today at 11 AM in the Coqui Classic in Puerto Rico. Wichita State beat Montana State yesterday in Puerto Rico 66-64. The Hokies beat Rice 54-45 in what was either an exhibition of defensive prowess by both teams or an example of poor offense by both teams; or some combination of the two.
Wichita State is 7-4:
They play a lot of people with 8 players averaging at least 15 min/game. They are a relatively young team with 1 freshman and 5 So or RSo in the top 9 players. Tech should have a slight advantage in height.
The Ladies play Rice today in Puerto Rico at the Coqui Classic at 1:30. A coqui is a small tree frog native to Puerto Rico. It is also, and probably more relevant, the name of a pharmaceutical radio isotope manufacturing company named for the frog. I can't figure out if the game is on TV anywhere other than the subscription channel, which may be Youtube TV, linked to the tournament web site.
Rice's record is 5-4: One of the losses was a very close game to current No. 11 Texas A&M.
James Wiseman, who played 3 games this season, is a projected top-5 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. The fewest college games played by a No. 1 pick to attend and play in college was Kyrie Irving (11 in 2010-11).The fewest by a top-5 pick is 5 (Darius Garland in 2018-19). https://t.co/qkSlTDqEUmโ ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) December 19, 2019
The Hokies play Gardner Webb Sunday at 1:30 in Cassell Coliseum. This is an ACC Network Extra game. Sorry Comcast guys. The Hokies should match up pretty well with Gardner Webb:
Gardner Webb is 3-6:
Stats for the stats nerds:
I am putting this up early because I am not going to have any time tomorrow before the game.

But is chattanooga supposed to be an actually good basketball team?
I haven't heard of them before, but they looked really good against us. If they are supposed to be a fair to middling team, was last night just a statistical fluke? or did we make them look good?
Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski opened his press conference tonight with a lot of love for VT head coach Mike Young. He also shared a nice moment on the court with #Hokies guard Wabissa Bede, calling him a "hell of a player" and a "great kid." pic.twitter.com/VUnHOdC4avโ Anthony Romano (@ARomanoWDBJ) December 7, 2019
The MBB team plays Duke tonight at Cassell at 7PM. The game is on the ACC Network(sorry if you have Comcast).
Duke is 8-1 with the only loss to Stephen F. Austin at home. How does that happen. For the only common opponent, Michigan State, we won on Maui; they beat MSU at MSU.
Duke is taller and probably more skilled than the Hokies:
Well I know I'm tired of sitting around waiting on the new DC announcement so since we actually have a pretty significant game at the castle tonight I thought I would get a Friday distraction thread going.
The Ladies play Purdue today at 7PM in Cassell in the ACC Big Ten challenge. The game is only on ACC Network Extra, which is on Watch ESPN if your cable supplier carries the ACC Network. That's everybody except Comcast.
Purdue is 6-1 with wins at Milwaukee(68-55), Chattanooga(66-34), Western Illinois(66-59), Northern Illinois(68-63), Drake(67-47) and Arizona State(59-52). Their loss was to No. 22 Gonzaga(50-63).
They are ranked #1 in the country less than 2 years later. LOL. It amazes me. If Buzz Williams went down in flames at VT and we were named in the Adidas scandal, we wouldn't win 15 games for 15 years after that. It's surreal. Similar to Penn State. - A couple lean years after their long time DC was exposed for raping children in the locker room- oh ho hum, back in the Top 10 every year. Signed jaded VT alum and Fan
While the record at the quarter* point of the season isn't as impressive as the one at the 1/8th* point, I think the majority of Hokie fans are happy with the progress made this season. A key victory against what should be a national contender under their belt, CMYball is sitting at 6-2 with a road conference win and that Maui upset of Michigan State.
Hokies play BYU at 11:30 tonight on ESPN@ for 3rd or 4th place in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational. BYU mostly plays 7 players with another 5 that get 1-6 minutes per game:
Again the Hokies will be shorter than their opponents; but I don't think there is a national player of the year candidate on BYU. So we should match up a little better skill wise.
Mark Titus and Tate Frazier of the Titus & Tate podcast, formerly One Shining Podcast (RIP T'd Up), are brand ambassadors for the Maui Invitational and are doing coverage from Maui on YouTube. After Day 1, they interviewed Wabissa Bede about the Hokies big win over Michigan State (interview starts ~7:25)
I kinda love that this has become Virginia Tech's thing. Is it juvenile? Absolutely. Is it even a bit corny? Sure. But the fact is they are embracing it. They have pictures of Landers Nolley for the roster page on their website, they are using him on a train, they have Mike Young in a Hawaiian shirt, all things that I can appreciate.
Joe, I don't know if you do GIFTORY for basketball (too many games), but a GIFTORY for Michigan State might be appropriate.
I don't have any specific requests, really, would just love to see some sweet VT gifs from this game.
(But I understand if you're too busy. Doing a GIFTORY for a basketball game might be letting the camel's nose under the tent flap, and I get it if you don't want to go there.)
