I just thought of an answer I could have added to the survey.

Pie wins the debate

If we are going to get to the National Championship game, Bama would have to lose and not be #1 or #2. For the record I'm going to be that guy and just worry about Duke for now.

We've been at it for a while. She knows how to use the toilet perfectly (including wiping and flushing), but telling someone when she has to go is the major hurdle we face.

Do you really think we get in over one of them with one-loss?

Honestly, why not? Assuming we're 12-1, that means we've possibly beaten at least a top 10 if not top 5 Miami as well as a top 3 Clemson. Let's play a quick game of if's. If Clemson wins out, beats FSU and USCe, they would have beaten a top 10 UGA, a top 5 FSU, and possibly a top 10 USCe (that's a pretty damn good argument for being in the National Championship). That also assumes that Miami's only loss is to us and FSU's only losses are to Clemson and Miami. Our only loss would be to the #1 team at the beginning of the year and we would probably be one of the hottest teams at the end of the year. There is A LOT that would have to happen for all of those things to occur, but IF they did, I do believe that if any of those teams had a loss, no matter who their opponent was, we would be above them. Of those teams though, Baylor will not go undefeated. Louisville has the best chance at being undefeated. Stanford could trip up Oregon again and Ohio State has just done enough to get by. They could slip as well. Just remember, there are 8 weeks of football left. There's plenty of time and crazier things have happened.

Do you see what happens when Tech doesn't have a game? CHAOS! No more bye weeks!

With the proven $EC bias ahead of us currently in the rankings, we would need 173 different things happen in order for us to get to #1 or #2. I do, however, think we could get to top 8 or so by winning out. If whomever we face in the ACCCG is undefeated, it adds a lot to our credibility. Along with if Bama stays #1.

Now, best case is to win out and get the ACC bid for the BCS. Second best case, win out, lose the ACCCG to an undefeated #2 team in either Clemson or F$U and still get an at large. Would need some $EC schools to stumble, but Clemson could pick off USC for one, and they could eat themselves in the remaining conference schedule.

That red velvet cake though...
mmmm....

Side note... did anyone else know that red velvet cake contains cocoa?

Both are delicious

You both know better

I get one from the American Cookie Co. every year on my birthday and I love it!

They have sugar cookie cakes now!

OMG they are SO good. I had one for my birthday last month from Our Daily Bread in bburg. AWESOME!

First of all this is a great analysis of the run game and the apparent issues therein. I could not be happier to be 6 & 1 at this point in the season. The offense seems to improve every game. I know Beamer's recipie isn't sexy but we are winning. That said I really wish we'd go for the six rather than kick the 3. It drives me crazy to see us settle for field goals in the redzone. Hopefully the young back and the beat up blockers will get a much needed rest during the bye and work some of this out. I think this scheme given time can become dangerous for VT. I like what the offense is doing...it just drives me nuts when we don't finish. Go Hokies!!!

I support the Whoopie Pie. Cake material, named pie. The perfect compromise. whoopie pie

So a few points:

A) The ESPN bowl projections (at least on the ACC Blog) come from where we are ranked. It's that simple. So whoever made those is assuming since Clemson is the highest ranked team in the ACC, they would win the conference and thus go on to represent us in the Orange Bowl. FSU is ranked #5 and if they were to somehow still be there at the end of the season, it wouldn't be hard to picture them getting into a BCS bowl thus they are picked to be in the Sugar Bowl. Now, unless the second best ACC team gets a BCS bid usually they go to the Chik-fil-A bowl, but since FSU is taken, Miami takes their place because they are, by rankings, third best in the ACC. We fall in at fourth which, based on picking order by bowls, gives us to the Russell Athletic Bowl. That's how they do it. It doesn't mean anything other than if the season ended today, that's where we would be. So don't take it too personally.

B) I know we all love the Hokies and we want nothing more than to fill our trophy case. But let's not be complete homers here. We will not play for a national title this year. Best case scenario, we win the ACC (which BTW would be quite an upset in the first place), we finish with a 12-1 record with a loss to Alabama. You're assuming an awful lot for us to get up to #1 or #2, I mean think about it:

1) There couldn't be two or more undefeated teams, meaning out of Oregon, Ohio State, Louisville, Baylor all would have to lose and nobody from the SEC (Bama & LSU) could come out undefeated either.

2) Now, think about all those teams I just named. Do you really think we get in over one of them with one-loss? I don't think that happens it's just not a realistic thought. Now, what about all the other teams out there that already have one-loss, they'd have to lose AGAIN!

My point is, while I think this team is capable of beating anyone and can win the ACC (it would surprise me to say the least if they did, but I don't think it's impossible) it's just simply not realistic to think that we will be in natinoal title contention at the end of the year. And frankly, to talk about it right now is just crazy.

With this team, be happy with just enjoying the wins week to week. If I took anything away from last year, it's that I'm not taking any win for granted and I'm enjoying it as much as I can. I know this site is meant for theoretical discussions and all that, but I think we've gone a bit far if we're talking about a national championship game.

With all that said, it's college football and anything can happen. I always root for chaos and this season will be no different.

Or a "Pick yourself up, man. You're on the ground." With a Bud leaning down watching with his hands on his knees like he does.

Sweet and delicious
Magnificent and tasty
Any dessert, Please

With those offenses, and those defenses? Would definitely be 4-2 #allofthesafeties

I seriously doubt there's a single reporter, blogger or fan who could follow up such a great defensive film review with a pie haiku anywhere in the world.
